Yu Chen

Singing teacher

Born in Shanghai and after studying automobile mechanics at the Shanghai Scientific University, CHEN came to France to learn singing and very quickly entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon where he obtained his master’s degree. He studied with Françoise Pollet and Jean-Paul Fouchécourt in France, with Francisco Araiza (at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart) and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Germany.

After his studies, CHEN won several singing competitions in Europe, such as the Béziers competition in France and the Wolf lieder prize in Germany.

He has sung in the operas of Lyon, Strasbourg, Caen, Rouen, Dijon, Stuttgart, Peking, Shanghai, at the Théâtre du Chatelet, at the Paris Philharmonic under the baton of Michel Plasson, John Eliot Gardiner, Leonard Slatkin, Daniel Barenboïm, Jean-Francois Verdier, Daniel Kawka, Pierre Cao, Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, Bernard Tetu, Mihàly Zeke… with a repertoire from opera to oratorio (Die zauberflöte, Entführung aus dem serail, Così fan tutte, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, L’elisir d’amore, Don Pasquale, Donizetti’s Rita, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Verdi’s Traviata, Rossini’s Il cambiale di matrimonio, Gluck’s Orpheus and Euridice, Offenbach’s La vie parisienne et mari à la porte, Bernstein’s Candide and West Side Story, Wagner’s Reingold, Carmen, the pretty girl from Perth and Bizet’s Djamileh, Faust and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet…) as well as oratorios and sacred music such as Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi, Hyden’s Die Schöpfung, Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Stabt mater and Petite messe solennel, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, and many of Bach’s Cantatas and motets…

Yu CHEN currently teaches at the Conservatoire National à Radiance Régional de Marseille and at the Schola Cantorum de Paris and is a visiting professor at several universities in China where he conducts a series of master classes each year.
